A couple new ones

I'm on spring break so I do have a fair amount of time, but not a fair amount of models to paint, which I suppose is the drawback to only having one unpainted unit at a time. Regardless I managed to get my hands on two, one which I had been looking forward to for a while and another that I didn't even know I wanted but it turns out I very much did. I did however based all the models I have now and I'm pretty happy with the result of everyone together. I played my biggest game yet on Monday (35pt) and after seeing them all lined up and happily slaughtering everyone, I decided that it worked well with them.

So the first one is Lich Lord Venethrax, who has an awesome (in my opinion) storyline, a pretty cool model (even if he does have that genestealer broodlord pose that I dislike) and decent rules. Overall he's my favorite warcaster in the Cryx army so I'm quite happy to have him. Overall I think he turned out pretty good but I still feel as though something is missing so I'm not going to call him done yet, but I will stop painting him for now.

I realize the picture quality is less than stellar but I think this gives a decent idea of what he looks like.

Next is Aiakos, Scourge of the Meredius which I think is the most recent or one of the most recent models added to the Cryx army as a whole. He was a Kickstarter reward for that Warmachine Tactics game (which I heard isn't being received too well) and then it seems he was resculpted for the masses, which is good because the other sculpt I've been seeing online is pretty 2D in my opinion. I have the good new one. He is Cryx's only journeyman warcaster and only 3pt and I look forward to playing with him. I sat with this guy all day today (not doing much else actually) trying to figure out how I was going to paint him and there was little inspiration online but I think he turned out pretty good. The flesh was a bit intimidating but I think I managed it without it looking TOO cartoony. He's basically one of those models that looks great 3 feet away but a pretty blotchy up close, kinda like those stage performers and their make-up. Anyway he's below: 

Both are great models and also I based them the same way as everyone else so that should give a good idea of how that went.

Tweedledee and Tweedledum

So I had to get a one point model to get up to 15 points for the Journeyman League that I started at my FLGS (which seems to be going well though I'm not making friends by playing Cryx, gotta rely on the ol' charm) and so I ordered a Machine Wraith, which is a fun little model. It possesses jacks and that's pretty cool. Anyway here he is:

I've also been experimenting with bases and decided to go for the cliched swamp theme. So I got my tall yellow grass, some water effects (was a dummy and got the sculpting water effect instead of the stand so now I have to get more), some course brown gravel and some lichen/moss deal. I hate it. Maybe it just needs more work, I need more practice or I should have primed the gravel with the base, who knows. Let me know what you think, I tested on tweedledee and tweedledum below.

Channel Your Inner Nurgle

I'm sorry to say that Papa Nurgle and I have not always had the best of relationships on the field of painting. I always wanted to do up a Death Guard army in 40k, even did a fair number of test models, but it never worked out. Painting the dirty and gritty is just something I never picked up with ease like so many others. Maybe it's because I don't use an airbrush. Who knows.

Anyway, I picked up a little squad of Bile Thralls for my Cryx army and instead of doing school stuff I painted them all in a day on Sunday (luckily I've been snowed in for three days now anyway). I can't say I'm happy with them but I could agree that they're probably tabletop quality. And who knows, they may be good to someone else. Regardless they're painted and I doubt I'll repaint them anytime soon.

You can probably notice that I did one a little different from the rest and layered the flesh instead of drybrushing and blending. Obviously I didn't like it as much but I didn't feel like repainting him. I like these guys, don't get me wrong, but they just didn't turn out how I wanted them. Anyway, hope you enjoy and such.

I planned on going to the game store here and trying out my hand at actually playing Warmachine (which I still never have with my own models), but the snowoclypse put an end to that plan. It's been pleasant having free time but now I'm out of models and can't get more.

Even though they're all individually quite different from each other, I think they fit together quite nicely. A rag-tag bunch of go-getters they are.

A Productive Day

After I finished my Withershadow Combine I ordered a Pistol Wraith to round out a decent 25 pt list to play with. In fact I have been going to game store here a fair bit lately and they seem like a good sort, a little strange but good none the less, so I've been thinking about joining their Monday Journeyman league. Anyway, I got my Pistol Wraith this afternoon and I finished it about an hour ago totalling about 3-4 hours all together.

My inspiration came from this post at Pain, Tin and Stuff here by Jani Hyvarinen, who I think did the effect much better than I did but I'm happy with my result anyway.

I tried to give ya a black background so that the white had more contrast but it almost seemed like it overdid it. The pictures definitely make it look like it's glowing on the highlights. You might not be able to tell but the eyes are glowing green and the only matching part to the rest of my army and of course he's unbased. But I like him, it's different from anything I'd ever done.


Maybe soon I'll post a picture of everyone together, but for now I hope you enjoy.

A few more models

I breezed through the Withershadow Combine without any trouble (which may or may not bite me in the ass when I look at them later down the road) and all things considered I think they turned out pretty well. I am a big fan of the models themselves which took very little effort to glue together and they are wonderful sculpts. I did not do any customization to them, not even the customary string in puppet-guy's marionette.

I know they aren't the best pictures but I don't really have much of a photobox anymore so they'll have to do. Besides, they're not exactly fabulous enough for one anyway. Still not based of course, just keeping that black for now.

I still haven't managed to take a good picture of the Deneghra that I redid (partly because I don't even like the sculpt, let alone my paintjob over the sculpt) but I did manage to catch an elusive Seether in the wild that I painted oh... about 8 months ago? Something like that.

Again, not great pictures but I think good enough to get the gist. Don't mind the dust on the base, it's not intentional and obviously I didn't mind it (only just saw it actually). Anyway, I'm a fan of the bone spikes on this one which were a royal pain to glue on but I'm glad I stuck with it. I remember it took me about 3 hours to get this one guys glued together, and about 2 hours and 45 minutes of that were the spikes.

Some Warmachine Miniatures

So while I don't play 40k anymore (nor do I play Warmachine for that matter, but at least I have the models) I am enjoying painting my Cryx models for what may or may not end up being an army. I think I'm up to... 30 pts? Maybe 35 pt, I'm not sure. I've gotten a fair bit done (two warcasters, a seether, a slayer, some bonechickens) but I think I'm most happy so far with the Bane Thralls I just finished.

 They're obviously not based, just like the rest of my army isn't, because I'm going to wait until either I start playing with them or when I have a lot of painted models (or more accurately until I decide on how to base them). I don't know if it's very noticeable in the pictures here but the two parts I'm most proud of is the corrosion on the bronze/copper plating and the glowing effects on the axe and eyes. Other than those two, everything else is pretty by the book.

And while I'm posting them I guess I might as well throw up some old pictures of my other miniatures so far in this army.

I've since changed Deneghra though because she looks so bland (just black and green bleh) but I haven't taken pictures since.

Next on my agenda is the Withershadow Combine, which I just got in the mail not too long ago but they're coming along quite nicely I think.
